International Animation Day (IAD) is a celebration of all things Animation. The day is coordinated by Association Internationale du Film d’Animation (ASIFA) [International Animated Film Association]. They started in 2002 to honour the birth of animation: the first public performance of projected moving images by Emile Reynaud’s Theatre Optique in Paris, on the 28th October 1892.

Offical ASIFA poster for IAD 2024

ASIFA have commissioned artwork from legendary animator Bill Plympton to celebrate IAD 2024.

Bill Plympton is a one-of-a-kind animator whose work spans the gamut from short animations to full length feature films, and as if his accomplishments there weren’t enough he’s also been involved in live-action filmmaking, music videos, videogames, and comics too! He’s accrued an impressive collection of awards, not least of all being Academy Awards nominations for his shorts “Your Face” (1988) and “Guard Dog” (2005), and the Prix Spécial du Jury award at the Cannes Film Festival for “Push Comes to Shove” (1991). Plympton has made eight animated feature films since his first, “The Tune,” debuted at the Sundance Film Festival in 1992. His most recent feature, “Slide,” was screened at MIAF this year, and is currently playing at other festivals around the world.

Thanks to ASIFA for coordinating IAD, and thanks to Bill for this year’s artwork. We love it to bits.

One Of A Kind: Tribute To Antoinette Starkiewicz

Join us for a newly expanded retrospective of Polish-Australian animator Antoinette Starkiewicz, following the success of our sold-out MIAF 2024 showcase.

A full hour of fims.

Followed by an extended Q&A panel discussion with new guest speakers as we celebrate her remarkable legacy.

Meet The Filmmaker: In Conversation With Lucy Davidson

Lucy Davidson is joining us to having a brief chat about her latest film – “Baggage” – that was created under the umbrella of the Aardman Academy… yes, THAT Aardman.

We will screen the film and follow with a breif Q&A session.

IAD International Shorts Showcase

A smorgasboard of short animation films.

We have an energetic range of some of the latest short animation films from arround the world.

A diverse range of stories exemplifying the totally unique properties of animation.

Conversation Corner

We are also trying something new.

We love how animated people get as they come out of the screenings, eager to discuss what they just watched. If you want to hear people’s thoughts, and share your own, we’ve set aside a space for people to sit down and discuss the films.

Feel free to join in in the Conversation Corner to connect with some new people and explore animation in personal conversation.
