About

Ah animation… how we love thee!

The Melbourne International Animation Festival is a week long celebratory feast. Featuring forums and over 400 of the best recently released, historical and retrospective animation from around the world.

Held annually in the middle of the year. MIAF showcase a comprehensive line-up from award winners, outstanding industry veterans, inspiring independents, stupendous studios and those wonderful newcomers exploring their talent on screen for the very first time.

Without a doubt, MIAF is the premier animation festival of Australia. And, one of the largest festivals in the world dedicated to auteur animation.

The entry deadline is usually January, and entry is FREE.

The team

Festival Director, Malcolm Turner is the driving force behind MIAF. He travels the world looking for new films and meticulously reviews every film submitted. Malcolm’s network of contacts around Australia and the globe enables some of the best films, and guests, make their way to Melbourne for the festival. Malcolm is a huge supporter of Australian animation and proudly champions this overseas.

Production Manager, Michael Hunt has been a long-term supporter of the festival since 2003. He started volunteering in a range of roles since 2013. In 2019 Michael took on a lot more of the behind-the-scenes organising. After the challenges of 2020-2022, Michael rebuilt the festival to the working format we enjoy today.
