Reflecting on 2023

We’d like to take a moment to bid farewell to 2023, reflect on our own successes, and acknowledge the incredible achievements of the animation industry this year.

Melbourne International Animation Festival returns

The return of MIAF this year was nothing short of spectacular. From groundbreaking visual storytelling to innovative techniques, the festival program showcased the diversity of animation and its endless possibilities. The festival’s success was a testament to the thriving creativity and enthusiasm within the animation community, among the artists and the audience.

International Animation Day celebration

Our celebrations for IAD this year were a resounding success, bringing together enthusiasts and professionals to celebrate this art form. The day was filled with insightful discussions and screenings of outstanding animated works. A perfect celebration for a day dedicated to recognising the artistry and influence of animation in our lives.

Navigating the creative landscape of 2023

What an exciting year for technological advancement in animation! We loved to see a combination of 2D and 3D animation which always blends the best of both worlds. Even some of the biggest animated films of the year, like “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse,” have combined 2D and 3D animation in exciting new ways.

Real-time rendering is a game changer for the industry, and ‘AI tools’ have caused a stir to say the least. We were pretty blown away by what they enabled in our COLLARTS workshops during IAD, and we are intrigued to see how it may simplify workflows and produce new creative work in 2024. Like any other tool, it’s always the quality of the hand that holds it that matters most.

Exciting debuts of Australian productions

Scarygirl,” “The Magician’s Elephant,” “Koala Man,” “The Amazing Digital Circus,” – ah, we just can’t name them all! We also can’t forget about the amazing landscape of short films that are making big waves, celebrating the artistry of concise storytelling. Hats off to the incredibly talented artists who are elevating Australia’s presence in animation across the globe.

As we reflect on these accomplishments, let’s carry the spirit of creativity and inspiration into the new year. May the festive season bring you joy, warmth, and the opportunity to recharge for an even more extraordinary 2024.

From all of us at Team MIAF, we hope you all have a happy and safe holidays!
