International Animation Day

International Animation Day (IAD) is a celebration of all things Animation. The day is coordinated by Association Internationale du Film d’Animation (ASIFA) [International Animated Film Association]. They started in 2002 to honour the birth of animation: the first public performance of projected moving images by Emile Reynaud’s Theatre Optique in Paris, on the 28th October 1892.

What

This year it is going to be on a Saturday so we’re going all-in and making a day (and a night of it). The Backlot Studios proved to be such a great home for MIAF earlier this year so that’s where we’re headed on October 28th. We have … count ‘em….THREE great programs in store for you all.

Plus, thanks to COLLARTS, there will be a FREE Artificial Intelligence Q&A session in the afternoon. It will be held at COLLARTS in Collingwood. Please register

Where

We start the day at COLLARTS Cromwell St Campus for a deep dive Q&A session on AI in animation. Entry is FREE – just roll up but bring your curiosity!

You can get there via train, less than 10 mins from Collingwood or North Melbourne train station.
Or a 10 min walk from the 86 tram.

The three screening sessions will be at The Backlot Studios in South Melbourne. We’re excited to be returning to this cosy space. Backlot has the perfect festival bar –  a great space to hang out before and after every screening.

Only 15-20 minutes by tram from the city. Jump on a #1 or #12 tram line, they run every 10 mins.

Very limited seating, just 44 seats. Don’t miss out.

Please note that Backlot is NOT fully accessible. There are stairs with handrails, but no lift to the second floor where the cinema is located.

Program overview

Animation In The Time Of AI

If you are an animator wondering where to start, COLLARTS and MIAF have joined forces to offer you an easy, low-key way to take a test drive on the AI freeway. A free half-day workshop on the COLLARTS campus will give six (6) animators a chance to experiment with the AI-powered video editing tool EbSynth under the leadership of animator and director Lachlan Gordon. All tech equipment and lunch is provided but spaces are strictly limited and MUST be reserved.

Artificial Intelligence Q&A Session

A free discussion on the future of AI in animation. Led by Lachlan Gordon (Workshop Leader) Lucy Hayes (Producer, 2D Animation Program Lead) and Malcolm Turner (MIAF Director) will discuss all that was learned and created during a day-long workshop and screen some of the work generated. This is your chance to take in a snapshot of what AI is, what AI can do and talk to a range of people who are at the head of the AI queue.

Anijammin’

MIAF Creative Director, Malcolm Turner, has teamed up with master Canadian animator Marv Newland to co-curate a mind bending screening of ‘ani-jam’ films drawn from the shattered remnants of their collective memories down through the ages. Marv, of course, is a maestro of the form being the genius guiding hand behind the 1984 classic “Ani Jam”, the film that dragged this form of animating into the spotlight in the first place.

This sessions is classified Unclassified (M) Mature, not recommended for viewers under 15 years.

IAD International Shorts Showcase

Next up will be a collection of brand new International Shorts created by a broad spectrum of filmmakers from around the world who have specifically offered their latest work for consideration in IAD screenings on every continent.

This sessions is classified Unclassified (M) Mature, not recommended for viewers under 15 years.

Grendel Grendel Grendel

And the night comes to a wonderfully and quintessentially Australian ending with a screening of the iconic Aus feature “Grendel Grendel Grendel”, animated by the one-of-a-kind Alex Stitt. Released in 1981, it was only the second animated feature to be made here and the restored version we are screening brings the vibrant, imaginative and gorgeously colourful artwork (ALL done by hand with REAL paint brushes) to the big screen where it looks simply divine.

This sessions is classified General (G).
