Indie animated shorts are the engine room of the international animation world. They’re the backbone of pretty much every animation festival in the world and the core element of the MIAF mission. Literally thousands are made every year and the best of them speak volumes for the dazzlingly creative possibilities that the unique properties of animation offer the artist with the imagination and skill to fully exploit them.
ASIFA (Association Internationale du Film d’Animation), the international organisation devoted to cultivating and promoting the art, craft and profession of Animation – and the overseers of International Animation Day events around the world – threw open their doors to animators who wanted to offer their latest films for consideration at all IAD screenings.
This program brings together an inspiring, eclectic collection of these new films and in the process provides a great snapshot of what’s happening in the world of auteur, independent animation right now.
Fittingly, the program opens with an outstanding, eye-popping, brain-bending new Australian film that will be introduced by its creator, Georgia Kriss. Georgia will walk us through some of the original artwork, run a couple of pieces of early developmental animation, and take a couple of questions from the floor before we knuckle down to see what the rest of the world has to offer.
