Conversation #1: Animation Beyond The Screen
In Conversation with Lachlan Plain
In making animation, before there is anything there is an act of imagination. Taking any interesting idea and running it through the imagination of an animator will result in an outcome of an entirely unique style and dimension. Melbourne animator and artist Lachlan Plain is a fine example of this sort of cross-disciplinary application of ‘thinking like an animator’. His films are visceral, determinedly hand-made works that breathe before us on screen. And it’s a practice that amply lends itself to making art you can touch – even if you’re not meant to.
We got hints of this at MIAF back in 2024 when we brought him in to talk us through his films but in this reconnection with Lachlan we’ll be focusing on how he translates his raw concepts into artworks beyond the screen and how his animator’s DNA infuses them with a particularly creative patina. Lachlan’s recent CV is a target-rich environment with a variety of exhibitions to look back on and a potential pivot to enlarging his vision for what the ‘paint-on-glass’ technique can deliver.
