An intensely personal documentary tracing the life and films of Dirk de Bruyn, the Australian abstract and experimental animator that MIAF is focusing on this year. De Bruyn brings a simple, open honesty to the camera and in the process gives us a richly textured pathway to decoding his films and understanding the instincts that brought him to making them.
Always aware of and alive to the camera’s presence, he veers subtly from talking about his life to showing us how he makes his films. The real gold in this film is slowing down for the unmarked intersections where those two threads cross – and it happens a lot.
This is a rare opportunity to meet one of Australia’s most acclaimed abstract animators and at the same time come to an understanding of the various physical and emotional forces that drive the creative need to make these sorts of films.
