Kids Club: Pixel Pinkie

Film classification regulations in Australia require all films to either be formally classified OR restricted to an audience of 18 years of age and over. Like most festivals, we do not have the resources to classify films, and it is for this reason alone that we are not able to admit any person under the age of 18 years to the main MIAF screenings.

(Films in competition)

Labyrinth

Programs of the best recently released films selected from 2400+ entries received from all over the world. Every technique, every imaginable subject, every genre. The MIAF International Competition screenings are the backbone of the festival line-up and your up-to-date snapshot of the incredibly diverse, eclectic and vibrant independent animation scene.

In addition to 6 ‘open’ International Competition screenings there will also be programs in competition that focus specifically on Australian talent, the digital community, the purely abstract, long form, new Croatian releases, the sublime technique of animating sand (our 2009 technique focus), highlights from SIGGRAPH Asia 2008, and for the very first time, the cult program Late Night Bizarre will be open to official voting!

On Time Off
Bill Porter
UK, 2008, 4'00
The slow broil of sunbathers blistering & warping in the heat on a nice day out to the beach.

Sparrows Are Children Of Pigeons
Nina Bisyarina

Quintessentially classic Russian-style animation. A little boy's imagination embellishes the world around him.

The Conservatory
Matilda Tristram

UK, 2008, 2'00

A series of quick-fix solutions to problems of an emotional nature seen through the prism of immediate home renovation.

The Black Dog's Progress
Stephen Irwin
UK, 2008, 6'00
Flipbook animation multiplied by ten and ten again. A screen filled to overflowing.
Codswallop
The Brothers McLeod
UK, 2008, 3'40
Somewhere in the world is a button that makes everything alright.
Around
Ryu Kato
Japan, 2007, 3'00

A flight of fancy through a pastel landscape where dreams influence other dreams and other dreams and other dreams.
The Bedwetter
Ingo Schiller, Stephan-Flint Mueller
Germany, 2008, 5'00
Every year we have at least frenetic one stopmotion fiesta – and this is most definitely it! A pixelated dream in which the real and the fantastical come together.
Eyelash
Marcel Hobi
Switzerland, 2008, 8'00
Our wishful thinking narrator is fast exhausting his eyelash supply.
Danny's Magical Potion
Gaute Hesthagen
Norway, 2008, 2'00
The global ripple-on effect of a simple, heartfelt utterance. A bottom-up solution to end wars and defeat evil.
Black Tea
Serge Elissade
France, 2008, 5’00
An investigation into tea; silent killer of the paranoid.
Chris / Chrigi
Anja Kofmel
Switzerland, 2008, 7'30
The twists and turns of the animation reflect the inner confusion of a little girl trying to come to terms with the death of an admired cousin.
Shaman
Luc Perez
Denmark, 2008, 11'00
A richly textured exploration of Inuit culture depicted with thick, flowing paint and imagery passed down through the ages.
Labyrinth
Patrick Jenkins
Canada, 2008, 8'00
Classic, bone-dry, film noir styling compliments this detective story with a celestial twist.
